In order to make a good impression on potential employers, candidates must master the entire interview process including possessing effective interviewing skills.

These skills refer to how well candidates interact with interviewers and convince them they are the perfect fit for the role. It also gives insight into a candidate’s communication and problem-solving abilities, two qualities which are crucial in the workplace.

For a successful interview, preparation is key! This means spending time researching the organisation and role you would be interviewed for, reviewing the role requirements, and identifying examples that depict how your skills, interests, and values align with the role. Do a “Mock interview with me” and rehearse answers to possible interview questions. During the interview, use the competency (task, action, and result) framework to answer questions. Be mindful of your tone and posture as 80% of communication is non-verbal.

Be sure to have 4-5 questions ready in the event that the interviewer asks if you have any questions for them. Some questions you can ask include:

  • What kind of supervision would I be working under?
  • What type of training will I receive for this role?
  • What is the company culture like?
  • What are the three most important attributes you are looking for?
  • What are the next steps in the process?

After the interview, it is important to follow up with the interviewer. This includes thanking them for their time with a handwritten note or email and following up with a phone call within ten (10) days if you do not hear back from them. If you do not make it to the final round, it is not a bad idea to ask the interviewer for feedback on areas where you can improve.

In conclusion, being able to master the entire interview process will aid you in increasing your chances of success in securing your dream role.
